What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the many skills used by our physiotherapists as an integrated approach to the management of pain and inflammation. It is a means of stimulating the body’s own healing chemicals such as endorphins in order to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation. Acupuncture can increase the release of the body’s natural painkillers in the pain pathways of the spinal cord and the brain, which modifies the way in which pain signals are received.
Our physiotherapists base their treatments on scientific research and clinical evidence that acupuncture can reduce pain
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine stainless steel needles in to the specific points in the skin.
Is Acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is a very safe procedure when carried out by qualified professionals.
Acupuncture needles are the same width as a human hair, therefore much smaller than an injection needle. The needles are all disposable, pre-sterilised and individually packaged. The number of needles used varies, however usually between three and ten.
Our physiotherapists will assess each patient’s case and treatment will be tailored to the individual usually in combination with other physiotherapy techniques and exercises.
